Russia warns of military cooperation with Iran

“New opportunities will emerge in our cooperation with Iran after the special regime introduced by Resolution 2231 in the UN Security Council expires on October 18,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told Interfax news agency on Tuesday.

He adds that the size of the collaboration and which areas are covered is another question.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said earlier in September that the United States would be able to prevent Iran from buying Chinese tanks and Russian air defense systems when the UN arms boycott expires.

The United States has tried to persuade the UN Security Council to extend the boycott, but without success. The Trump administration has also stated that the UN sanctions against Iran – which were lifted in connection with the nuclear agreement from 2015 – have been reintroduced. But this is disputed by the other countries that entered into the agreement, among them Britain, France and Germany.

The United States withdrew from the nuclear agreement with Iran in 2018, and thus the country has no power to reintroduce the UN sanctions, according to the countries that are still part of the agreement.

Ryabkov emphasizes that the United States’ “illegal” actions will have no effect on the agreements that Russia will enter into with Iran.
