The exercise will take place against the background of the current crisis between Russia and the West over Ukraine, where Western statesmen are warning of a possible Russian invasion of a neighboring country in the coming days due to the high number of Russian troops at the Ukrainian border. Moscow refuses, saying it has begun withdrawing some of its troops from the border.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin would oversee the exercise from the “situation center” and that he needed to take part. He declined to release further details. He added that Russia informed “different countries through different channels” about the planned exercise.

The ministry emphasized that the exercise had been planned before. The aim is to check the combat readiness of military command and control authorities, combat crews, launchers, vessels and strategic bombers in the performance of specified tasks.

The exercise will also involve the Air Force, the Southern Military District, the Strategic Missile Forces, the North and Black Sea Navy Fleets, TASS added.
