Russia wants to regain control of 3 religious sites in Jerusalem, before Israel claims it

JERUSALEM – Deputy Chair of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society Igor Ashurbeyli has confirmed that Russia plans to regain ownership of three historical religious sites on the Mount of Olives.

The statement was reported by RT.com on Friday (3/6/2022). Russian President Vladimir Putin has given the green light to launch measures to regain ownership of the three sites.

Deputy Chair of the Palestinian Orthodox Imperial Society Ashurbeyli, which oversees Russian properties in the region, explained that the three sites include the Russian Orthodox Church of Ascension, Church of Mary Magdalene and the Russian Wax Bell Tower.

“Right now, Russia has a historical opportunity to change ownership status with respect to these sites as Israel has started scanning all non-owner properties,” Ashurbeyli said in a statement.

“If we don’t have time for this now, all property whose owners will not be identified will be turned into Israeli property,” he said.

He explained, “Then we will never gain possession.”
