Attack Russia ke Ukraine that has occurred since February 24 raises new concerns, namely threats World War III and nuclear catastrophe will result from this invasion. The discourse of World War III is quite terrifying, considering that Russia and Ukraine both have nuclear resources.
Nuclear Law Expert at Airlangga University, Dr. Intan I. Soeparna, assessed that it is not impossible that Russia will use nuclear weapons to resolve the Ukrainian conflict.
According to Intan, Russia has not signed the Treaty Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), so that the country is not bound by the norms in the treaty.
Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has also previously revealed that he will use nuclear weapons as a last resort if negotiations to end the war do not reach an agreement.
Seeing this possibility, Intan assessed that the prevention of nuclear use would depend on the success of the world countries and the Russian people in urging Putin.
“So, the prevention of nuclear use today is very dependent on the success of the insistence of other countries and the Russian people themselves. Meanwhile, Russia (Putin) must consider the consequences of nuclear war,” Intan explained in a press release received. CNNIndonesia.comWednesday (9/3).
However, a number of observers assess World War III is difficult to happen.
“That nonsense. Who wants to start World War III? Just look at what Russia is fighting against Ukraine,” said International Relations Observer (HI) from Airlangga University, I Gede Wahyu Wicaksana when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (8/3).
Wahyu assessed that Russia did not use full military force to attack Ukraine. He also said Russia did not completely destroy Ukraine.
In addition, the world’s major actors for World War III, such as NATO and the United States, did not deploy their troops. The US and NATO member countries only provide military equipment assistance. This is one of the reasons the possibility of World War III is very small.
Wahyu also mentioned that Western countries do not dare to fight with Russia.
“Because they don’t dare to fight. How to bring down Putin without them having to join the war, yes sanctions,” Wahyu explained when asked about the reason Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia.
