The invasion of Ukraine by Russia and the resulting war that is waged caused a doubling of state cyber attacks against infrastructureaccording to a report released Monday by Microsoft.
In 2022 cyber attacks perpetrated by states targeting infrastructures they went from representing 20% of the total (2021 percentage) to 40%.
According to the Microsoft report, this increase it is largely due to Russia’s goal of damaging Ukrainian infrastructureas well as the “aggressive” Russian espionage of Ukraine’s allies, including the United States, for which it damages the digital infrastructure.
Russia has also accelerated its attempts to access technology companies to prevent them from functioning properly or to obtain information from government customers of those companies, especially if they are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Indeed, 90% of the Russian attacks detected by Microsoft this year have targeted NATO member countries.
In addition to Russia, Microsoft has identified Iran, North Korea and China like three other countries that have also significantly increased their cyber attacks on infrastructure.
