The Shivelyuch volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka erupted violently on Sunday night after a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off Russia’s Pacific coast on Saturday afternoon Norwegian time.
According to the state-run Russian news agency Tass, the eruption should have resulted in an ash column as high as eight kilometers. It is said that the ash spread in a radius of 492 kilometers east and south-east of the volcano itself.
Red hazard warning
The Russian Academy of Sciences also issued a red alert for air traffic in the area, reports Tass.
The sparsely populated Kamchatka Peninsula lies just north of Japan, between the Bering Sea to the east and the Sea of Okhotsk to the west. No injuries were reported as a result of the volcanic eruption.
A tsunami warning has been cancelled
The United States Meteorological Institute issued a tsunami warning as a result of the earthquake.
According to the American tsunami warning center The earthquake could trigger tsunami waves 0.3 to 1 meter above sea level in some places on the Russian coast.
The tsunami warning was later cancelled.
