/ world today news/ Defense agreements that the United States signed separately with Finland and Sweden will give Washington control over Northern Europe, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.
“Now Washington will basically have control over the region. NATO has started the rapid military development of the territories of both countries, despite the fact that Sweden has not yet joined the alliance,” Zakharova added.
The United States and Finland signed a defense agreement on Monday that boosted military cooperation between the two countries, obliging Helsinki to open its military bases to US forces and allowing the two militaries to conduct joint training.
The United States signed a defense pact with Sweden earlier in December and will sign a similar pact with Denmark later this week, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said.
Now the US will get maximum access to military facilities in Finland and Sweden and will be able to use them for its own purposes, noted Zakharova.
“We would like to warn that we will take all necessary measures to protect our national security interests,” the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.
