The first semi-final of the Billie Jean King Cup will pit Russia against the United States on Friday in Prague. Russia beat trophy-holding France on Wednesday in Group A.
Alizé Cornet’s defeat to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (5-7 6-4 6-2) in the second single sealed the fate of the Blue, who had to win 3-0 to reach the semi-finals. The Russians, who beat Canada for their entry, needed just one point to win this pool.
Beaten by Slovakia on Tuesday in Group C, the United States snatched their ticket to the semi-finals even before the double of the match between them and Spain. Sloane Stephens and Danielle Collins needed to win their straight-set singles to secure Team USA’s qualification, and they did not fail.
