Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The war between Russia and Ukraine has yet to take its toll. This time the country that should be affected is the Netherlands.
Russia’s state-owned energy company, Gazprom, confirmed that it would cut the supply of natural gas to the Dutch gas trading company GasTerra, Tuesday (31/5/2022). This is due to Russia’s revenge against the European Union (EU) which requires energy purchases using the ruble.
“Gazprom Export has notified GasTerra of the suspension of gas supply from May 31, 2022,” read a statement on Gazprom’s Telegram channel, dikstip. CNN International.
“(This will take place) until payment is made according to the procedure established by the Decree.”
The Netherlands is not the only victim. Danish energy company Rsted Denmark, also received a warning Monday, although it is not yet known whether official gas supply cuts have been made.
Please note, both of them refuse to pay for gas in rubles. “The international agreement contains clauses on payment and currency. Sticking to the agreement remains our position,” Gaterra said at the time.
Previously, Moscow had done similar things to Poland, Bulgaria and Finland. Rules for the use of the ruble were announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 1.
According to the European Union Statistics Agency, Eurostat, about 43% of the natural gas consumed annually in the European Union (EU) is purchased from Russia. The rest are imported from Norway, the Middle East, the United States (US) and North Africa.
Russian Oil Ban Official
Meanwhile, European Union (EU) leaders finally unanimously agreed to a ban on Russian oil imports. But this is not the whole, but only 2/3 of it.
This was achieved Monday evening local time. It came after weeks of tough compromise with Hungary, which has so far resisted a boycott.
“Agreement to ban Russia’s oil exports to the EU. This immediately covers more than 2/3 of Russia’s oil imports, cutting a huge source of financing for its war machine,” European Council chief Charles Michel tweeted during the summit, quoted as saying AFP.
“(This is) maximum pressure on Russia to end the war.”
The oil embargo is the sixth in a series of sanctions imposed by the region due to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Russia itself attacked Ukraine since February 24 and caused Europe’s biggest refugee crisis since World War 2.
