Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Italian energy company says that 15% of gas supply from Russia will be cut starting Wednesday (15/6/2022). The maneuver comes as the country joins other Western nations in condemning Russia’s war on Ukraine.
In a statement, Eni said that he got this news from the Russian government-owned energy company, Gazprom. The company does not yet know the exact reason for the cut because Eni has opened up and provides rubles for gas payments.
“Eni confirms that Gazprom has announced a limited reduction in gas supply for today, by about 15 percent,” a company spokesman told AFP.
Italy itself was previously quite dependent on Russian gas supplies. The country of Pizza gets 40% of its gas needs from Moscow.
However, after Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Italy joined other Western countries in imposing sanctions on Moscow. Rome was also involved in making plans for the transition from Russian gas along with other European countries.
Previously, Russia itself had decided to cut its gas supply to several European countries such as Bulgaria and Poland. The reason is that these countries rejected Russia’s request that the gas be paid for in rubles.
Russia’s demand for payments in rubles itself results from the country’s cut off from foreign exchange access. Prior to the attack on Ukraine, the country led by President Vladimir Putin often received gas payments in foreign currencies such as the euro.
