Russia-Ukraine Peace? Putin wants to meet Zelensky

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Russian government hopes for a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This is believed to be able to bring peace in Ukraine to an end.

However, the Kremlin insisted the meeting could take place under one condition. It was the signing of the agreement document which was ready to be signed by the two leaders.

In a press statement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this was Moscow’s wish. He said that the deal had not yet been agreed so that there had been no recent updates on the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“In principle, the President (Putin) never refuses such a meeting (with President Zelensky), but certain conditions must be prepared for it, namely, the text of the document (agreement) (to be signed),” Peskov told reporters as written CNN InternationalThursday (15/4/2022).

Last week, Russia said the peace proposal proposed by President Zelensky was unacceptable. This makes peace talks between the two sides run slowly.

In a statement, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the latest proposal offered by Kyiv was far from the points previously agreed in several meetings between the delegations of the two countries.

“This inability to agree once again highlights Kyiv’s true intentions, his position of pulling out and even spoiling the talks by walking away from the understanding reached,” Lavrov was quoted as saying. Reuters.

The Kremlin also accused the intervention of Western countries led by the United States (US) has hindered this progress process. One of the things considered to hinder peace for Russia is the alleged massacre of civilians in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.

Kyiv and West say there is evidence. Includes pictures and witness testimonies collected.

Russia sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24 in what it called a “special operation”. This was to reduce the military capabilities of its southern neighbor and eradicate what he called dangerous nationalists like the Nazis.

So far, Moscow has decided to focus its attacks on the Eastern region of its neighboring country, in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Both areas are known to be territories that Russia claims as independent and not under Kyiv sovereignty.
