North Korean troops were engaged in combat in Russia’s Kursk region in recent days for the first time, two US officials told Reuters today.
One of the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said they took part in a battle on November 4. Officials did not say whether North Korean forces suffered casualties and did not elaborate on the engagement.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday that the first battles between the Ukrainian army and North Korean troops “opened a new page of instability in the world”. Earlier the defense minister had stated that a “minor engagement” had taken place.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed in an interview on South Korean television that the first engagement with North Korean troops is an apparent escalation in the war that Russia started when it invaded Ukraine in 2022.
Earlier this week, the Pentagon announced that 11,000-12,000 North Korean troops were in Russia, with at least 10,000 deployed in Kursk.
