Ukraine today struck the dome over a decommissioned reactor at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, although radiation levels remained normal and no serious damage was caused, the Russian-appointed administration said.
It is currently unclear what weapon was used against the nuclear plant, which Russian forces took control of shortly after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The station had previously reported being attacked by Ukrainian drones.
For its part, the International Atomic Energy Agency, which has experts at the site, announced that it had been informed by the Russian administration that a drone had been detonated there and that the information was “consistent” with the observations of the IAEA.
IAEA director-general Rafael Grossi said both sides should avoid actions that “endanger nuclear security”.
The plant, which is Europe’s largest, said Ukrainian armed forces “attacked the dome” of the building that houses reactor number 6.
“The radioactivity levels at the station and the surrounding area are unchanged.”
Reuters is currently unable to verify the accounts of both sides on the battlefield. Ukraine has not commented on this.
