The troops of both sides claimed success in the center of the city which was surrounded by the flat field.
“The siege and subsequent liberation of the city solved many problems,” said Denis Pushilin, Moscow-appointed leader of the Donetsk region.
“Soon, Vugledar will be a very important new success for us,” he said again, as quoted from AFPSaturday (28/1/2023).
But Ukrainian forces say the town, which had a pre-invasion population of around 15,000 people, remains contested.
“There is heavy fighting there,” Ukrainian military spokesman Sergiy Cherevaty told local media.
“For many months, the military of the Russian Federation… have been trying to achieve significant success there,” he said.

Moscow’s push to seize the city of Vugledar is part of its bid to control the entire Donetsk region, which was declared part of the Russian Federation in a referendum last year.
The city also lies along the southern front which some say could be the focus of a possible Ukrainian offensive seeking to cut Russian-occupied territory into the Sea of Azov.
