Russia: Two killed in Ukrainian strike in Russian border town of Belgorod, local governor says – 2024-03-16 21:21:18

Two people were killed and three injured in a Ukrainian missile strike in the Russian border city of Belgorod, the regional governor announced today.

In a statement on the Telegram messaging app, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said a man and a woman were dead. The man died when his truck was hit and the woman was killed in a parking lot. This woman’s son was seriously injured and doctors are “fighting to keep him alive”. Two more people were injured.

According to the governor, the city was hit by missiles fired by a Vampire system. He said that vehicles and buildings were damaged in Belgorod and surrounding villages.

Belgorod, a province bordering Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, has come under several attacks by Kiev forces since 2022. In December, 25 people were killed in a single missile strike on the city.

Earlier today, Gladkov said five people, including a child, were injured in a drone attack on a vehicle moving near the Ukrainian border.

Russians continue to go to the polls today in the three-day election process to choose the country’s president, with Vladimir Putin yesterday accusing Ukraine of trying to sabotage the election, in which he is certain to win a new term.
