Russia to Withdraw from Treaty on European Armed Forces, Says Deputy Foreign Minister

The treaty on European armed forces, from which Moscow plans to withdraw, contradicts Russia’s security interests, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in a comment published this morning, cited by Reuters, BTA reported.

The Russian parliament is expected to decide today when to formally denounce the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) following President Vladimir Putin’s May 10 decree.

“All the illusions of those who still hoped that Russia would return to the treaty will disappear,” Ryabkov said in an interview with Parlamentarnaya Gazeta, a weekly newspaper published by the Russian parliament. “The CFE Treaty, due to the changed situation, is against our security interests. This obvious fact will now have to be recognized in the West.”

Last week, Ryabkov was appointed to represent Putin at the parliamentary procedure to denounce the treaty, which aimed to regulate the number of forces deployed by the Warsaw Pact and NATO countries. In 2015, Russia announced it was withdrawing from the treaty.
