Russia to develop rail link between Baltic and Indian Ocean

The president made the announcement in a video released on Sunday to mark Railway Workers’ Day in the Slavic country, TASS news agency reported.

“We need to accelerate the construction of Russia’s railway infrastructure at a new technological level, using the most advanced developments. And here we must not only start from today’s needs, but also create a plan for the future, for the coming decades,” Putin stressed.

The country’s agenda therefore includes the construction of high-speed railways and international logistics corridors, the development of routes passing near the Azov and Black Seas, and a railway that will extend from the Baltic and Barents Seas to the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean, he added.

The tasks are truly of great magnitude, and I am confident that, thanks to your knowledge, experience and focus on achieving results in the interest of the country, we will finally solve them, the Russian leader continued.

The President recalled the task of further modernizing the eastern railway system: the Baikal-Amur and Trans-Siberian railways, which should operate interconnected with the Northern Sea Route and such promising projects as the Northern Latitude Railway with access to Arctic ports.

Putin also stressed the important role played by railway transport and its workers in the development of the country. “The opening of new world markets, the growth of domestic tourism, the constant work of enterprises, including the defence industry complex – all this is their merit,” he summed up.
