Russia Threatens To Block Twitter This Month For ‘Illegal Content’ | NOW

Russia threatens to block Twitter if the social medium does not remove certain content within a month, the Russian news agency reports TASS Tuesday.

Russian Twitter users have been struggling with longer ones since last week loading times through government measures. The speed is deliberately reduced because, according to the government, the messaging service has refused to remove illegal content.

A Twitter spokesperson denied that, saying that they were concerned about the impact of the government’s measures on freedom of speech in the country.

“Twitter is not responding to our requests as they should. If this situation continues, Twitter will be blocked within a month without a court order,” said Vadim Subbotin, deputy head of internet watchdog Roskomnadzor.

Earlier this month, the regulator made it clear that Twitter risks fines for allegedly failing to delete thousands of messages containing information about suicide, child pornography and drugs since 2017.
