A new supersonic cruise missile “Zircon” has been tested in Russia. A rocket launched from a ship in the White Sea hit the target exactly 350 kilometers away.
As early as March 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the new generation of weapons – supersonic cruise missiles – could reach almost any point on earth and could evade the US missile defense system.
Representatives of the Ministry of Defense announced this week that the new medium-range missile can fly nine times faster than sound, but this time the speed of sound is exceeded seven times. It has a maximum range of about 1,000 kilometers and is designed to arm ships and submarines.
Concerns about the trial have already been expressed by United States officials. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesman, said Russia’s new supersonic missiles, which could be equipped with nuclear weapons, would destabilize the situation and pose serious risks.
