Russia Targets Neighboring Kazakhstan with Army Recruitment Ads Amid Ukraine Conflict

It is a well-known fact that Russia has had problems recruiting soldiers for the army. In the past, they are said to have recruited Russian prisoners, among other things.

Now, however, they have set their sights on neighboring Kazakhstan.

Enticing advertisements have started to appear on the screens of Kazakhs, according to the news agency Reuters.

Through internet campaigns, they offer an immediate payment of 495,000 Russian rubles to those who enlist in the Russian army.

The sum corresponds to over NOK 50,000.

Targeted

They are taking action in the midst of the escalating conflict in Ukraine, writes Reuters.

Norway declared an “unfriendly” country

The news agency has seen the ads, which are clearly aimed at people in Kazakhstan. The ads show Russian and Kazakh flags, and the slogan “shoulder to shoulder”.

In addition to the one-off payment, a monthly salary of 190,000 Russian rubles, corresponding to over NOK 20,000, is promised. Unspecified extras should also tempt the target group.

If you click on the ad, you will be taken to a website. There you get an offer to take part in the Russian army in the Sakhalin region in eastern Russia.

The Human Capital Development Agency in Sakhalin is listed as the owner of the website. The organization was created by local authorities, according to Reuters.

Calling for peace

Traditionally, Kazakhstan has been one of Russia’s closest allies. The former Soviet republic is home to over three million ethnic Russians.

“Russia’s most dangerous man” with shock claims

However, the government of the country has not supported the invasion of Ukraine. They have called for peace.

Reuters has tried to get comment from the sender of the ad and the Kazakh government – so far without success.

In Kazakhstan, it is not allowed to participate in military conflicts abroad for payment.
