MOSCOWRussia successfully tested the Stupor electromagnetic weapon against a Ukrainian drone. According to sources familiar with the program, field trials are the first for the device against an actual adversary.

Stupor is an electromagnetic projector aimed at interfering with the drone’s communication with its operator.

This weapon interferes with the mission of the targeted aircraft by rendering it unable to receive orders or transmit intelligence back. The drone may fall to the ground or be hijacked afterwards.

The robotics research center of the Russian Ministry of Defense presented the device during an arms exhibition in 2017.

It said the futuristic-looking device was effective at distances of up to 2 km, as long as the target was not obstructed.

TASS said it could not tell where exactly the device was tested, with sources only stating the test was in the western part of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
