After several attacks against the Kerch bridge, which connects the Krym peninsula with the Russian mainland, the Russians have reportedly taken several measures to strengthen security around it.
Recent satellite images will show that, among other things, they have created an underwater barrier, consisting of submerged ships and booms, to deter drone attacks.
On Friday, the British Ministry of Defense describes the images as confirmation that it has happened.
– At the southern part of the bridge, this includes several vessels spaced 160 meters apart. These are located in the same place as the Ukrainian naval drone attack on 17 July, the ministry writes X/Twitter.
The bridge has both symbolic and strategic value for the Kremlin:
It is to be the very proof that Russia and the Ukrainian peninsula are linked together, and at the same time is very important for the supply of military equipment to Russian forces in Ukraine.
Satellite images reveal how Russia is setting up barricades around the important Kerch bridge: – It is important for the Russians to keep the bridge, says intelligence expert Tom Røseth. Reporter: Edward Stenlund. Video: Dagbladet TV / X / Youtube Show more
– Given this importance, it will be extremely important for the Russians to secure it. They have struggled with it. The latest plan is then to deploy physical obstacles, but the question is whether it has a particular effect, says Tom Røseth, associate professor and principal lecturer in intelligence at the Norwegian Defense College (FHS), to Dagbladet.
He points to two reasons why he believes that the Kerch Bridge, despite the Russians’ latest efforts, is still at risk.
The Ukrainians have sea-going drones which are highly manoeuvrable and which can probably steer away from the obstacles. The bridge will probably increasingly come within range of the Ukrainians’ self-produced missiles.
– It will also be threatened in the future in the war, notes Røseth
