Prince Grigoriy Alexandrovich Potemkin, also known as Catherine the Great’s mistress, played a key role when Russia annexed Crimea in 1783, creating the “New Russia” in southern Ukraine.
Potemkin, also considered the founder of Kherson and Odesa, is said to be a source of inspiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin. This is where his imperialist ambitions in Ukraine come from and why he refers to Russians and Ukrainians as “one people”.
Transferred from the Cathedral of Santa Caterina
Potemkin’s remains were placed in a crypt in the Cathedral of Saint Catherine in the city of Kherson in Ukraine. These have now been removed from Russia and moved further into Russian-occupied territory as Ukrainian forces move to the Kherson region.
This was written by several foreign media, including Business Insider.
– We have transported the remains of the holy prince that were in St. Catherine’s Cathedral on the left bank, says Vladimir Saldo, the Russian-appointed leader in the Kherson region, in an interview with Russian TV, according to The New York Times.
– Potemkin wanted to hate Putin
The historian and author of the book “Catherine the Great and Potemkin”, Sebag Montefiore, is not particularly impressed by the latest invention of Putin and Russia. In a Twitter message, the historian writes that Potemkin detested Putin’s “primitive” and “cruel” nationalism.

Furthermore, Montefiore predicts that Putin will bury the stolen remains in a magnificent new grave in Moscow, during a major “televised extravaganza” to promote the war.
