In recent days, Norway’s neighbor to the east has set several dismal records in connection with the corona pandemic, which is once again ravaging the country.

On Saturday, Russian authorities were able to report for the fifth time on record high deaths as a result of covid-19, writes The Moscow Times.

In the last 24 hours, 697 corona-related deaths have been registered in the country. During the same period, 24,439 cases of the virus were registered. Much of the infection is due to the delta variant that was first discovered in India.

Moscow is the city that has lost the most people to the virus in the last 24 hours with 116 deaths. At the same time, 7446 cases of infection have been registered in the city. In St. Petersburg, 1733 cases of infection and 110 corona-related deaths have been registered in the last 24 hours.

The capital is empty of vaccine type

In the capital Moscow, the stocks of the Russian vaccine EpiVacCorona are completely empty, and the city is now left with Sputnik V and Sputnik Light as the only alternatives in the vaccine program, skriver The Moscow Times.

The city has been the epicenter since the start of the pandemic, and work is now underway to put more hospitals on standby to cope with the high number of patients.

– Now, with this explosive growth in infections, the capacity we have is no longer enough. We will have more hospitals on standby to fight the virus as quickly as possible, I hope, said the city’s deputy mayor Anastasiya Rakova, on Friday.

– But we will do what we can to avoid a new “lock down”, she added.

Despite good supply of Russian-produced vaccine variants, vaccine demand has been weak. Among Moscow’s 12.5 million inhabitants, around 2.6 million people have taken the first dose of vaccine.

On Monday, VG reported that in several Russian regions it will be mandatory for workers in several sectors to be vaccinated, but President Vladimir Putin opposes mandatory vaccination.

“I am against mandatory nationwide vaccinations,” Putin said during a public meeting earlier in the week.
