Refugees trapped in Belarus made several attempts to force their way into Poland late on Wednesday, where Warsaw said it had strengthened the border by deploying additional guard troops.

United Nations human rights chief Michelle Bachelet called on EU countries to mitigate and resolve the “intolerable” crisis.

“These hundreds of men, women and children should not be forced to spend another night in the cold without adequate shelter, food, water and medical care,” he said.

Belarusian soldiers patrol the border as hundreds of migrants try to cross from the Belarusian side of the border with Poland near Kuznica Bialostocka, Poland.
