Russia Scraps Import Duties on Frozen Chicken to Tackle Soaring Prices, Putin Takes Action Ahead of Re-Election

Russia will scrap import duties on frozen chicken for the whole of next year, the government announced on Saturday. President Vladimir Putin wants to increase domestic supply and reduce the sharply increased prices. This concerns a maximum of 140,000 tons of frozen chicken.

Putin, who is up for re-election in March, last week issued a rare apology to a pensioner who complained to him about rising egg and chicken prices. He did this during a question-and-answer session on television.

The government has also exempted 1.2 billion eggs from import duties in the first half of next year to try to curb prices. Egg prices in Russia have risen by more than 50 percent this year. Other chicken products have also become significantly more expensive. As a result, people with the lowest incomes are hit the hardest.
