Russia sanctions 144 politicians, journalists and activists from 3 countries

Those sanctioned have participated in the “barbaric campaign” unleashed by those three countries to demolish monuments dedicated to Soviet soldiers who expelled Nazi troops from the Baltic republics during World War II, the Foreign Affairs statement said.

They are also participants in the persecution of the Russian-speaking population, the revision of history, the exaltation of Nazism, the criminal policy aimed at increasing the Ukrainian conflict and the supply of weapons to Kiev, he points out.

The note stresses that those sanctioned, who are prohibited from entering the country, are those who defend “most hostile” positions against Russia.

“This step is taken as a response to the sanctions and other measures against Russia actively promoted by the Baltic countries, interference in internal affairs and the instigation of Russophobic sentiments,” he points out.

The Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian authorities, who view Russia as an “existential threat” to their countries, have advocated isolating it politically and economically since the start of the Russian military campaign in February 2022.

Although all three countries are members of NATO, in recent years they had asked the Alliance for a greater military presence in the region for fear of a Russian invasion.
