Russia registers new maximum number of covid infections

Russia registered 63,205 new covid-19 infections in the last twenty-four hours, a new high since the start of the pandemic, which comes amid the spread of the omicron variant across the country, local authorities reported.

This Saturday, the authorities had reported 57,212 cases of coronavirus, which had already become a contagion record since the outbreak of the global health crisis in March 2020.

In Moscow, the main source of infection in Russia, the number of infections stood at 17,528, the highest daily figure recorded in the Russian capital since the outbreak of the pandemic.

In St. Petersburg, the second largest city in Russia, 9,535 cases were detected, also the absolute maximum.

So far in the pandemic, Russia has cumulatively detected 11 million 108 thousand 191 cases of covid-19.

Despite the increase in infections in recent days, The downward trend in deaths continues caused by the infectious disease -679 in the last day- that came to exceed a thousand for several months.

According to the authorities, the Delta variant is still dominant in the country, where the omicron already accounts for 48.1% of the cases.

The new variant has already been detected in 64 of the 85 regions of the country, according to information this Sunday.

Given the sharp increase in cases, the authorities of the Russian capital have recommended the home regimen for people over 60 years of age and people with chronic diseases.

They have also asked companies to reintroduce teleworking for as many workers as possible in order to avoid crowds on public transport in the capital.

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin has reduced the number of public events and works in a “mixed” regime, that is, telematically and in person at some meetings.

Meanwhile, the government announced this week that its institutions return to the home office, as in March 2020, in an attempt to slow the advance of the new wave of coronavirus.

The director of the Gamaleya Center, where the Russian Sputnik V vaccine was developed, once again pointed out this Sunday that the preparation is effective against the omicron variant.

However, Alexandr Ginzburg believed that the pandemic will not end omicron, since due to its rapid spread and high contagiousness, new mutations of the virus may arise.
