Russia has passed a law raising the age limit for military service. It is interpreted as a measure to supplement the lack of troops by amending the law instead of the mobilization order, which has a heavy political burden.
According to the British Guardian on the 26th (local time), the lower house of the Russian Federation Parliament passed a law on the 25th that raised the upper age limit for Russian men to be drafted from 27 to 30.
Under the law, which will take effect on January 1 next year, Russian men aged 18 to 30 are expected to be obliged to serve in the military.
This legislation is intended to replenish the troops that Russia will send to the Ukrainian front without relying on the politically burdensome mobilization order. When the Russian government announced a partial mobilization order in September of last year, tens of thousands of people subject to conscription fled Russia to avoid conscription, causing chaos.
For the bill to come into force, it must be approved by the Federal Council (Senate) and signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, as this is considered a formal procedure, the upper age limit for conscription is expected to be applied from next year.
