Russia proposes “Finlandization” of Ukraine – UNIAN

This non-alignedness did not prevent Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014.

Neutral Status. Ukraine could help solve the crisis in the Russian-Ukrainian border region.

Russia’s permanent representative to the EU, Vladimir Chizhov, said this in an interview with British television, the propaganda TASS.

“Yes, I’m sure,” Chizhov said in response to a related question, adding with irony that “the shortest way to Ukraine’s neutrality is to dissolve NATO.”

Chizhov recalled that Russia already has countries with neutral status near its border, such as Finland and Sweden. At the same time, he noted that Moscow is “forced” to also keep an eye on other neighbors where NATO missile launchers are being installed: Poland and Romania.

Rumors of Ukraine’s “Finlandization”

Earlier in the Western press there were already mentions of a possible “Finlandization” of Ukraine, which French President Emmanuel Macron may offer to Kiev.

At a final press conference in Moscow, however, Macron denied this suggestion. “I have not heard such a thing and I have never used such categories in relation to Ukraine,” he said in response to a question from Bloomberg.

Meanwhile, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said after a meeting between Macron and Putin in the Russian capital that it was too early to talk about “Finlandization” of Ukraine: “And, of course, it still depends on Kiev itself. So why talk about it now. Let’s wait to see what happens in Kiev.

He added that in such a case, Macron’s ideas “have rational seeds on which to proceed.”

What non-aligned status means for the country

Neutral status The legal and political status of a state that pledges not to take part in war between other states and, in peacetime, not to participate in military blocs.

The declarations of neutral status by countries such as Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, and Norway during World War II did not help them avoid aggression.

Now European countries with non-aligned status are moving away from strict adherence to status and are increasing their cooperation with NATO and the EU.

Because of the lack of a guarantee of Ukraine’s hypothetical neutral status from Russia, Ukraine’s “neutrality” could create conditions for a resumption of aggressive action.

From 2010 to 2014, Ukraine unilaterally refused to opt for military and political alliances, as the Kremlin demanded. During these years, Moscow asserted leverage over Kiev, which resulted in the extension of the Russian fleet’s stay in Crimea and, subsequently, the rapid occupation of the peninsula.

In addition, the neutral status meant that it was impossible to receive outside aid for defense needs.

Neutrality as a guarantee of non-aggression only works if the neutral state is outside the interests of the revisionist state.
