Prisoners in a Russian penitentiary held guards hostage for hours. Then special forces intervened. Is the uprising connected to an attack in Moscow?
Several people were killed in a prisoner riot and hostage-taking in a Russian prison for serious criminals. The four hostage-takers were killed by snipers and the guards held hostage were freed, the National Guard said in response to the incident in the town of Surovikino in the Volgograd region.
According to the prison authorities, three hostages were also killed. Four people, three guards and one prisoner, were also injured by the hostage takers but were able to escape.
Men with stab and cut wounds
“Two of the injured are in critical condition,” said the head of the regional health authority, Anatoly Sebelev. The men sustained stab wounds and cuts in the altercation with the hostage takers.
