Moscow, Aug 1 (EFE).- The Kremlin said Thursday that it will activate preparations for a visit by Venezuelan President Nicolas Madurothe country now that Russia has declared it the winner of last Sunday’s presidential elections, despite accusations of fraud by the opposition.

“Now that he has become the winner of the elections, it can be assumed that preparations will of course be activated.”he told radio station Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Peskov acknowledged that the visit had been in the works for a long time, but that it was impossible to reconcile the agenda of Maduro and the head of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putinafter which the electoral campaign in Venezuela also began.

Now, he added, the visit “will take place within the timeframes that leaders deem appropriate.”

Peskov called this week on the Venezuelan opposition to accept its defeat in the presidential elections and congratulate Maduro on his victory at the polls.

“We see that the opposition does not want to resign itself and accept its defeat, although we believe that it should do so and congratulate the winner of the elections”said.

Peskov also considered it “very important”, in reference to the post-election protests that have broken out in Venezuela, “that attempts to heat up the situation within Venezuela are not encouraged by third countries”.

Putin congratulated Maduro on Monday for his electoral victory, telling him that he was always “welcome” in this country; while the Russian deputies and senators who participated as observers denied the fraud by the government.

Two Kremlin allies in Latin America, Cuba and Nicaraguaare among the few countries in the region that have accepted Maduro’s electoral victory.EFE
