According to NATO’s intelligence chief, Russia may target submarine cables.
Russia maps the most important underwater infrastructure systems of Europe and the United States in the Atlantic Ocean, Baltic and North Seas. This is done for a likely attack.
This was stated by NATO Assistant Secretary General for Intelligence and Security David Kuttler, writes Bloomberg.
According to him, the Russian Federation can take aim at submarine cables and critical infrastructure of the West. Moscow wants to get leverage on the countries that supply Ukraine with weapons.
“Russia is actively engaged in mapping critical Allied infrastructure both on land and on the seabed, an effort supported by Russian military and civilian intelligence services,” Kuttler said.
The publication writes that NATO member countries want to protect submarine cables, which account for 95% of Internet communications. Also, financial transactions in the amount of about 10 trillion dollars pass through them daily.
Kuttler also pointed to Russia’s military strategy for the early destruction of vital infrastructure in the early stages of the conflict. The RF Armed Forces are trying to apply this tactic in Ukraine. Moscow’s efforts are being led in part by the Defense Ministry’s underwater intelligence program, he said.
While China is also active in the Atlantic, Kuttler said it is more interested in buying infrastructure than testing vulnerabilities.
According to the publication, NATO recently created an underwater infrastructure coordination group, headed by Lieutenant General Hans-Werner Wiermann.
Recall that a week before the explosions on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, which occurred in September 2022, the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Navy conducted large-scale maneuvers that could be a cover for sabotage.
