Russia partially blocks access to Facebook

The decision became according to the Russian government, because parent company Meta has shielded the pages of four official Russian media companies. Meta would thereby have violated Russian law.

Roskomnadzor, the telecom regulator of the Russian government, asked Meta yesterday to lift these restrictions. Meta refuses to do that.

The company would therefore be “guilty of violating the fundamental human rights and freedoms of Russian citizens”. Access is now partially restricted. What that means exactly is not clear.

War Ukraine

Russian troops invaded Ukraine yesterday and are currently attempting to take the capital Kiev. NATO and the European Union have responded with sanctions against Russia.

News agency RIA Novosti, TV channel Zvedza, and news site Gazeta.ru and Lenta.ru have close ties to the Kremlin. According to Nick Clegg, Facebook’s head of global affairs, allegedly asked the Russian government Meta to stop fact-checking messages from these organizations.

Meta refused to do that, resulting in this move. “Normal Russian citizens use our apps to express themselves and organize themselves,” concludes Clegg. “We want them to be able to continue to do that.”
