Russia: Opposition to the Taliban centered in Pansjirdalen

Sergei Lavrov says there is an opposition to the Taliban in the Pansy Valley, led by Vice President Amrullah Saleh and Ahmad Massoud.

– The Taliban do not control the whole of Afghanistan: There are reports of the situation in Pansjirdalen, where the resistance driven by Saleh and Massoud is concentrated, Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow on Thursday.

Ahmad Massoud is the son of former guerrilla leader Ahmed Shah Massoud, who was defense minister for nine years until he was killed by suicide bombers on September 9, 2001, two days before al-Qaeda’s terrorist attack in the United States that led to the invasion of Afghanistan that fall.
