Russia opens gas tap to Europe further | Economy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered state gas company Gazprom to supply more natural gas to Germany and Austria in November. In this way he wants to alleviate the energy crisis in Europe.

The increase in gas supplies may only take place once Russia’s underground gas reservoirs have been refilled, the Tass news agency reported. According to Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, his company could start supplying more gas to Europe from November 8.

Putin has repeatedly shown reluctance to continue supplying gas to Europe in recent weeks. He also pointed out that the deliveries already made exceeded the contractually agreed quantities.

According to observers, Russia used refusing additional gas supplies to alleviate Europe’s energy crisis as leverage to force the rapid commissioning of the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Germany, for which permit procedures are still ongoing. The Kremlin denies that.

In Russian state media, Putin is celebrated as the savior of Europe for his decision to supply more gas.
