The Russian Football Federation (RFU) has officially filed a lawsuit with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after: FIFA and UEFA boycotted Russia’s participation in international football.
As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA compactly banned Russia from appearing in important football events such as the 2022 World Cup Qualification play-off on 28 February.
Five days later, on March 3, Russia threatened FIFA-UEFA with a plan to file a lawsuit with CAS. RFU actually did it on Monday (7/3) local time.
“The RFU has sent a lawsuit today to CAS,” reads the RFU’s official statement TASSTuesday (8/3).
Due to the sanctions imposed by FIFA-UEFA, Russia will not be able to participate in the 2022 World Cup Qualification play-off against Poland on March 24. This automatically makes Russia certain to fail to the 2022 World Cup which will take place in Qatar later this year.
Apart from the Russian national team, Spartak Moscow were also affected and they were disqualified from the Liga
Four years ago, Russia hosted the World Cup. In the quadrennial football party, Russia was able to set foot into the quarter-finals. Russia’s move was stopped after losing on penalties to Croatia.
Russian football is not the only sport affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Other branches such as Formula 1, Judo, to multi-event events such as the Winter Paralympics have also imposed severe sanctions on Russia.
