Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The British government promised to put new pressure on Iran. This happened after Tehran executed a citizen of dual Iranian-British nationality named Alireza Akbari due to espionage charges.
So far, London has summoned Iran’s most senior diplomat and recalled its own ambassador from the country. Britain has also imposed sanctions on Iran’s attorney general Mohammad Jafar Montazeri.
The opposition in the British Parliament has so far asked the government to include Iran’s military guard, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), into the list of banned terrorist organizations in Britain. According to Secretary of State James Cleverly, this option could happen.
“We are not limiting ourselves to the steps that I have announced,” Cleverly said as quoted by Arab News, Tuesday (17/1/2023).
“We are witnessing acts of revenge from a weak and isolated regime, obsessed with suppressing its own people, weakened by its own fear of losing power and damaging its international reputation.”
“Our message to the (Iranian) regime is clear: the world is watching you and you will be held accountable, especially by the brave Iranian people, many of whom you suppressed and killed.”
Even so, Cleverly admitted that London was still grappling with the fate of other dual citizens held by the Khamenei regime in the country. Britain also has a strategic goal of restoring the international nuclear pact with Iran.
On the other hand, Prime Minister’s Spokesman Rishi Sunak said that Downing Street was still reviewing and coordinating with its partners regarding the best steps to put pressure on Tehran.
