Russia: Moscow rejects any meddling in the Romanian elections –

Russia has rejected accusations of meddling in Romania’s presidential election, three days ahead of a runoff in the EU-NATO country that could be won by a far-right candidate who opposes European aid to Ukraine.

“We categorically reject all hostile attacks, which we consider completely unfounded,” Russian diplomatic spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement, denouncing “increasingly absurd accusations” against Moscow.

Romanian authorities on Wednesday declassified documents describing alleged destabilization maneuvers reminiscent of techniques used by Russia.

Social media platform TikTok, on which 62-year-old far-right candidate Calin Gheorgescu, who won the first round, campaigned, told AFP it had “no evidence that a coordinated campaign has taken place on the platform to date”.

Maria Zakharova denounced a climate of “unprecedented anti-Russian hysteria”, calling on the Romanian authorities to “stop inflating the ‘Russian threat’ in order to manipulate public opinion”.

The second round of Romania’s presidential election will be held on Sunday, a vote that observers see as critical to the future of the country of 20 million people. Romania borders Ukraine, which faces from 2022 a large-scale Russian attack.
