Russia launches first rocket to the moon since 1976
Russia has begun the launch of the Luna-25 space probe, according to the Russian space agency Roskosmos.
Reuters reports.
It is the first time since 1976 that Russia has sent a spacecraft to the moon.
Russia hopes to be the first to carry out a landing on the moon’s south pole, in an area estimated to have reservoirs of ice water.
According to Roskosmos, the main goal is to contribute to the new development of technology for soft landings, as well as to search for natural resources on the moon.
The trip to the moon is estimated to take five days. The spacecraft will then orbit the moon for five to seven days before it can land on the surface. The space probe is expected to be in operation for around one year.
Luna-25 is launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, around 5,500 kilometers east of Moscow.
In connection with the launch, a nearby village was evacuated.
