Russia launches large-scale attacks on Ukraine, causing power outages and destruction of critical infrastructure

Russia launched a new round of large-scale attacks on Ukraine on the 11th. Multiple power plants and key energy infrastructure including the capital Kiev, Zaporozhye, Odessa, and Kharkiv were attacked, and more than 200,000 people were forced to lose power.

Multiple unconfirmed videos have been circulated on the Internet, showing the Trypilska coal-powered power plant more than 40 kilometers away from Kiev igniting a raging fire and black smoke constantly rising out. Local media quoted the power company as saying that the power plant was completely destroyed by Russian air strikes.

Ukrainian President Zelensky stated on the social media Telegram that Russia launched more than 40 missiles and 40 drones into Ukraine overnight, most of which were shot down, and called on the West to provide air defense support as soon as possible.

The commander of the Ukrainian Air Force said that the air defense system intercepted 18 incoming missiles and 39 drones. It said a total of 82 missiles and drones were used in the attack.

The destroyed power plant provided the main electricity supply to Kiev, the city of Cherkasy and the Zhytomyr district.

The operator of the Ukrainian power grid (Ukrenergo) issued a statement saying that substations and power generation facilities in Odessa, Kharkiv, Zaporozhye, Lviv and Kiev regions were damaged in Russian attacks.

DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private power company, said two of its power stations were attacked by Russia, causing further serious damage. DTEK suffered the most violent attacks since the Russian invasion in 2022 on March 22 and 29, and about 80% of the available power was destroyed.

Bridget Brink, the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, said, “The situation in Ukraine is serious and there is no need to delay.” He said that 10 missiles hit critical infrastructure in the Kharkiv region alone.

Ukrainian presidential assistant Oleksiy Kuleba said that the northeastern region of Kharkiv was hit by missiles and artillery shells, and long-term rolling blackouts have been implemented. At least 200,000 people have been forced to lose power.
