Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia The Russian Defense Ministry appears to be stepping up efforts to recruit more people to fight in Ukraine. This was shown through the launch of an advertising campaign by appealing to how ‘manly’ the Russian people were to participate in the war.

Launching CNBC International, Russia continues to recruit hundreds of thousands of new troops by echoing the promotion of the Russian armed forces. This can be seen in the advertisements that have filled Russian social media sites, billboards and TV in recent days.

Promoted slogans such as “You are a real man. Be one” and “a man’s life is a choice”.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the ad it launched would appeal to ‘real men’ to join. Apart from that, Russia also promised high salaries, social guarantees such as housing assistance, and a secure future for the families of those who served in the war.

“This new advertisement appeals to the candidate’s masculine pride, appeals to ‘real men’, and highlights the financial benefits of joining,” the Russian Ministry of Defense said via its official Twitter account, quoted by CNBC International, Monday (24/4/2023).

The public recruiting push comes at a time when Russia and Ukraine are preparing to increase the pace of fighting. In addition, Kyiv is expected to launch a counteroffensive soon.

Until now, the Russian-Ukrainian war has entered its second year with little sign of defeat or major victory for both sides. That is evident as Russia tries to consolidate its grip on four areas in the east and south it declared “annexed” last year and as Ukraine tries to regain lost ground.

Russia is seen as trying desperately to avoid more forced conscription. A partial mobilization announced last September prompted thousands of Russian men to leave the country because they wanted to avoid military service.
