Russian security services said today they had arrested three “citizens of a central Asian country” who were plotting a bomb attack in southern Russia, a week after an attack on a concert hall near Moscow that killed at least 144 people.
The FSB said in a statement cited by Russian news agencies that it “put an end to the terrorist activities of three citizens of a Central Asian country who planned to commit a terrorist act by detonating a device in a public place in the Stavropol region.”
Russian television broadcast images showing men lying on the ground, with FSB agents standing above them between cars.
According to the public news agency Ria Novosti, materials for the construction of an improvised explosive device and chemicals were found in the residence of the suspects.
The announcement comes a week after the Crocus City Hall attack on the outskirts of the Russian capital, which killed at least 144 people and wounded 360, was claimed by the Islamic State group, despite Russian authorities saying they were looking on it a Ukrainian imprint.
Twelve people were arrested after the massacre, including the four alleged perpetrators, who are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic in central Asia where Islamic State operates.
The FSB has regularly announced for years that it is preventing attacks in Russia, and generally few details are known about these cases.
