Rinat Maksioutov, head of the Vector State Center, said during a televised meeting between Putin and the directors of major Russian research centers that are planning an initial phase of clinical trials with three people on June 29 vaccines on a sample of 180 volunteers.
“Volunteer groups have already been founded. We have received more than 300 applications, “he said to the Russian president.
According to Maksioutov, scientists in his laboratory near the Siberian city of Novosibirsk have developed prototype vaccines based on six technological platforms. Tests are currently underway on mice, rabbits and other animals to determine the most promising prototype by April 30.
He added that Vector plans to conduct preclinical studies by June 22 before testing on humans.
Rinat Maksioutov also said that the first human tests could start as early as May, “if the Ministry of Health approves it.”
According to him, Vector has tested human vaccine technologies for other diseases that could be used to develop the disease against the coronavirus.
“We have the ability to model the vaccines based on other existing and registered vaccines, which will allow us to reduce preclinical studies and conduct clinical trials,” added Health Minister Mikhaïl Murashko at the meeting.
“If we act competently, in an organized and disciplined manner, we will pass this difficult phase in our country’s life with minimal losses,” said Vladimir Putin.
The vector laboratory carried out secret research on biological weapons during the Soviet period and contains samples of various viruses from smallpox to Ebola.
Russia currently has 7497 coronavirus cases and 58 deaths.
