According to the information from the sources, the Russian Ministry of Defense has decided to form one division of the Military Transport Aviation (VTA) in each of the four strategic directions. The first air regiment has already been formed in the Far East, three more new regiments will be organized in the southern, western and northern directions.
According to military experts, this decision was made in view of the experience of the Special Military Operation, and after the start of the special operation, the workload of military transport aviation doubled.
The Ministry of Defense stated that the task of the new aviation units will be the transportation of personnel, weapons and military equipment, the release of landing units and reconnaissance landing units. In addition, the planes of the new aviation regiments will deliver materiel, fuel, and evacuate the wounded.
According to the military’s plans, the new regiments should be equipped with Il-76 and An-26 military transport aircraft, and will also include Mi-26 heavy transport helicopters. According to the military analyst, reserve colonel Viktor Litovkin, the strengthening of the VTA will dramatically increase the capabilities not only of our army, but also of Russia as a whole.

„Most recently, BTA pilots picked up Russian-speaking refugees from Egypt who arrived there from the Gaza Strip. Our transport pilots work in any environment, in any weather, at any time of the day or night! Their counterparts in civil aviation, as a rule, cannot cope with most such tasks.” Litovkin said.
That is why the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is increasing the number of BTA aircraft, and it is only a matter of our aircraft factories producing transport aircraft in the required quantity. In the current conditions, we need maximum localization of the process, including producing powerful and modern engines for transport aircraft, on-board electronics and many others ourselves. This is a big state task. Our military-industrial complex must work not only for purely military needs, but also in the interest of the BTA.
According to Litovkin, the creation of new air transport regiments in our military districts is necessary, but in general, transport aviation can operate in almost any direction.
„Of course, the area where the SVO takes place is a top priority for our BTA today. But no less important are such tasks as securing the facilities along the Northern Sea Route, the Russian garrisons located beyond the Arctic Circle, in Primorye and other parts of the vast country.
We have long had a request to increase the transport air regiments, but only now, due to an increase in government orders in this area, we have the opportunity to equip them with new aircraft. This is primarily the Il-76MD-90A aircraft.
Recently, the Il-96-400T wide-body freighter made its first flight after undergoing the airworthiness restoration procedure. We now have a whole line of modern transport aircraft that can be used to equip aviation regiments. They have a new control system, avionics, etc.
Litovkin noted that Russia is currently actively training specialists – pilots and technical personnel capable of servicing modern transport aircraft.
