Two Russian tennis players will clash in the match for the title. Brilliant response to sanctions!
The 2023 Australian Open lost the last representative of Russia in adult brackets. Could not overcome the resistance of Stefanos Tsitsipas Karen Khachanov. But Russian fans still have someone to cheer for at the tournament in Melbourne.
Two of the most talented young tennis players in Russia and also friends will compete for the prestigious title in a face-to-face confrontation.
A unique achievement of Russian tennis
All the attention of tennis fans for the past two weeks has been riveted to the Australian Open. On Sunday, the last winners will be known, and the tournament will become part of history.
Against the backdrop of tense battles on the Melbourne courts of our singles tennis players Rublev and Khachanov, the successes of talented stars from Russia in the junior tournament almost went unnoticed. Mirra Andreeva (7th seed) and Alina Korneeva (9) set a unique achievement for Russian tennis players that cannot be beaten – only repeated.
Never before in the history of the Australian Open have two athletes from Russia taken part in the final of the junior category at once. Now the title will definitely come to our country, which will happen for the first time since 2014. Then Elizaveta Kulichkova became the champion.
Rival girlfriends
Andreeva is considered the most promising young tennis player in the country. At the age of 15, she is already in the top 300 of the WTA rankings. Among girls, she takes a modest 14th place, as she already prefers to play in women’s competitions.
Last year, she won four senior tournaments, though they were held under the auspices of the ITF. Before the performance at the Australian Open, Mirra became the finalist of the prestigious tournament in Traralagon (Australia), showing there a fantastic serve at a speed of 180 km/h.
At the junior Australian Open, Andreeva proved that she was not in vain considered a contender for winning the title. On the courts in Melbourne, Mirra played five matches and did not lose a set.
Alina Korneeva in the ranking of the best tennis players under 16 is located next to her future rival. At the adult level, so far she cannot boast of significant successes, but she shows herself excellently in juniors. A trip to the Melbourne tournament for her can already be considered successful. Korneeva had serious trials during the tournament. For example, she met with a very dangerous second seed Teresa Valentova and defeated her in three sets.

At the same time, our tennis players are close friends: they won the title together at the children’s world championship in the Czech Republic. At the Australian Open, Alina and Mirra competed together in doubles. There, the Russians also showed an excellent result, reaching the semi-finals. The winner of the face-to-face confrontation will be revealed by our girls early in the morning (Moscow time) on Saturday.
