(Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered increased border security and sent special forces to control mass gatherings and protect residents in areas of Ukraine claimed by Russia. This was reported by the Russian national media.

Russia’s RIA news agency said Putin had to ensure border coverage through the border services and the Federal Security Service (FSB), adding, “We must use force and the means to stop him quickly and effectively.”

“The counterintelligence services need maximum calm and concentration of forces,” the TASS news agency said.

He added that the four provinces of eastern and southern Ukraine, which he unilaterally announced in September, are in a “very difficult” situation. He said it was the task of special agencies to ensure the safety of citizens living in the four states and that they would provide the latest equipment and weapons to do so.
