Russia Intercepts American “Reaper” Drone Over Black Sea

Russia announced yesterday that it had sent one of its fighters to intercept an American “Reaper” drone, which was approaching its borders over the Black Sea, before turning back. The Russian Ministry of Defense said that after “detecting an air target approaching the borders of the Russian state in the Black Sea, Moscow sent a Su-30 fighter, and the Russian fighter crew identified the air target as a (MQ-9A) reconnaissance march of the US Air Force.” She explained, “With the approach of the Russian fighter, the foreign reconnaissance march turned back, away from the borders.”

Later, the Russian fighter returned to its airport without any incident, according to the ministry.

A similar incident between Russian planes and Western drones is not uncommon, whether over the Black Sea or the Baltic Sea, against the background of the conflict in Ukraine.

At the end of last June, Moscow confirmed that it intercepted in the same way three planes of British forces, and in recent months, similar incidents occurred with French, German and Polish planes.

And last May, Russian planes intercepted four US strategic bombers over the Baltic Sea in two separate incidents within one week, and a month before that, an American march in the Black Sea fell, following maneuvers by Russian fighters, which sparked tension between Washington and Moscow.
