Russia Hastens to Connect Afghan Banking to Global System

MOSCOWRussia working hard to get Afghan banking reconnected to the SWIFT global payments system. The statement was made by Russian Special Presidential Representative for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov.

“We are trying to achieve this because this situation creates problems for the United States itself, for the executive branch, which cannot directly provide assistance to the Afghan people, bypassing the Taliban, because SWIFT is disabled. You need to use SWIFT. Yes, it is possible to develop some kind of monitoring mechanism, where these funds will be channeled,” said Kabulov, reported by Sputnik on Friday (12/17/2021).

After the Taliban seized power in Kabul in mid-August, Western banks froze Afghan and donor funds worth billions of dollars to deny these assets the Taliban-led government.

In addition, Afghan banks have been temporarily cut off from the SWIFT payment system.

However, in early December, the US Treasury allowed the country’s citizens and permanent residents to make personal money transfers to Afghanistan.

SWIFT is an international bank information transfer and payment system used by more than 11,000 of the largest organizations in nearly all countries.
