The proposal to temporarily restrict the export of buckwheat groats and buckwheat flour was made by the Russian Ministry of Agriculture in order to “maintain the necessary quantities of buckwheat groats and buckwheat flour on the domestic market and to prevent sharp price fluctuations”.
From November 2020, a significant increase in Russian buckwheat exports to a number of importing countries has been observed due to the established international situation, the ministry pointed out.
According to the data of the Russian Grain Exporters’ Union, in the current agricultural year (from July 1, 2020 to April 2021), China has become the largest buyer of buckwheat – 26.2 thousand tons. In second place is Latvia, which supplied 14.3 thousand tons of buckwheat, in third place – Ukraine (13.2 thousand tons). 9.8 thousand tons of buckwheat were exported to Lithuania, but 8.5 thousand tons to Japan.
